Step 1: Open Smartflow from the Flow Builder

In Userflow, go to Flows and click “Create flow”

Then, select ‘Smartflow Creator”

Name your flow, and describe the purpose of the flow so that it can guide Smartflow’s creation process. 

Step 2: Start the flow recording 

Next, you’re in the flow builder. Type in your app’s URL from exactly where you want it to start so that Smartflow can record the flow path you want to build. 

Once you’re ready, click ‘Start click-through.’ 

Step 3: Walk Through the Ideal Product Adoption Path

When you’re in your app, you’ll see a banner at the bottom showing that Smartflow is recording the flow. 

Navigate through the steps until you get to the end of your intended flow path. Every click becomes a potential step in the product adoption flow Smartflow will generate.

Once you’re finished, click ‘Done’.

Step 4: Let Smartflow Do Its Magic  

When you return to the Flow builder, you’ll see Smartflow hard at work, creating your flow. 

Maybe go get a coffee or something. It’ll take a minute (or less). You can even log off. Once it’s done, Smartflow will notify you via email. 

And then once it’s done, voila! You’ll have your flow fully built out and drafted for your review. 

Step 5: Review and Refine the Generated Steps

Now that Smartflow gave you a complete flow ready to go, here’s where you can give the finishing touches. 

For instance, you can remove steps that aren’t essential on a second glance, reorder steps if you want a different pacing, tighten your copy or adjust the tone with AI Rephrase and add clarifications that might’ve been missed by Smartflow. So keep things as short as possible so that your flows can be effective guides that get your users to value. 

Tip 2 — Write a clear Purpose statement

Every Smartflow starts with a good Purpose. The Purpose field is what tells Smartflow what your flow is about and why users need it. A strong Purpose makes your generated flow cleaner, clearer, and more reusable.

Keep it generic, action-focused, and tied to a user goal. Avoid specific names, UI elements, or IDs.

A simple formula: [Action] + [Feature] + [Goal]

Example: “Guide users through creating their first dashboard so they can visualize their data.”

Tip 3 — Think about where you want to start and end before you hit Record

Smartflow works best if you know exactly where you’ll begin and end. If you meander a little bit because you’re unsure of where the user would go, Smartflow will also capture that. 

Tip 4 — Use real UI paths, not shortcuts

Smartflow captures the interface you walk through. If you jump around using internal shortcuts or admin-only pages, your flow will reflect that.

Use the same UI a real user would see and interact with. 

Tip 5 — Use AI Rephrase to stabilize tone

Once Smartflow generates the copy, run a quick Rephrase pass on the sections that feel uneven.

This gives you a second look at the copy while still saving you editing time. 

Tip 6 — Localize your entire flow with one click
